Stop at the top of your backswing and count to two. Sounds easy. Most golfers physically can’t do it — and that’s the whole diagnosis. This tool measures how long you actually held it.
A rushed backswing hides everything. You get to the top with the club still moving, so the downswing starts before the backswing finishes and your only option is to throw the club at the ball from the top. Every fat shot and every block right lives in that handoff.
Stopping dead removes the run-up. From a standstill you have no momentum to lean on, so the sequence has to be right or nothing happens. That’s why the pause is the fastest honest test in golf — and why it doesn’t cost you speed. When I held the top for two and a half seconds, my downswing came out quicker than my normal average.
“If you can’t hold it, you were rushing it.”
Phone vertical, propped on your bag, facing your chest. Whole body in frame, head to feet, 8–10 feet away.
Make the backswing, stop at the top, count “one — two” out loud, then swing. Keep the clip 5 to 10 seconds, one swing only.
Stop. Count to two. Then fire.

Slow motion stretches your hold. If you shot it in slo‑mo, say so and the numbers get corrected back to real time.
A real pause fixes the handoff. Next check whether the club is actually at parallel when you stop — run Top Check. Then see whether the chain fires in order out of the pause with Force Score.
